Lesson 04: The Holy Prophet's Childhood and Youth

The Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad() was born in the blessed month of 12th of Rabi al-Awwal, Monday, on April 22, 571 AD. The Holy Prophet's father, Hazrat Abdullah had died about two months before his birth. His mother Hazrat Syeda Amina passed away six years after the birth of the Holy Prophet . After that, his grandfather Hazrat Abdul Muttalib raised him. When he was eight years old, his grandfather also left this world. After the death of his grandfather, his loving uncle Hazrat Abu Talib raised him. According to the customs of the Arabs, a pious woman Haleema Saadia from the tribe Banu Saad took the Holy Prophet with her for upbringing in the villages. He stayed there for four years

Hazrat Haleema Saadia says that one day Hazrat Muhammad said to me: "Oh dear mother! my sister and brothers are not seen throughout the day, where do they go as they wake up in the morning every day?” I said that these people go to graze goats. After hearing this, he said: "Oh dear mother! Please allow me to go with my siblings too." So, on his insistence, Hazrat Haleema Saadia gave permission to the Holy Prophet to go to the pasture with her children and he used to go to those pastures everyday where the goats of Hazrat Haleema Saadia used to graze and he looked after them.

Hazrat Abbas (R.A) narrates that I said to the Holy Prophet "O Messenger of Allah! A certain sign indicating Prophethood encouraged me to enter your religion. I saw that you used to play with the moon in the cradle in your childhood days and the moon used to bend towards the direction you pointed with your blessed finger. The Holy Prophet said: I used to talk with the moon and it used to talk with me and did not let me cry."

(Al-Khasais Al-Kubra, 1:53)

The first word that the Holy Prophet spoke, was based on praise and worship of Allah. When Hazrat Muhammad returned to Makkah from Hazrat Haleema Saadia and stayed with his mother, Hazrat Umm e Ayman took care of the Holy Prophet all days and nights with full devotion.

i. Providing comfort and service

Once there was a severe famine in Arabia and the chiefs of Arabia came to Hazrat Abu Talib, the guardian of the Kaaba. He accompanied the Prophet Muhammad to Haram, asked him to sit with his back with the wall of Ka'aba and started praying. During prayer, the Holy Prophet raised his blessed finger to the sky, and suddenly clouds appeared all around and immediately it rained so hard that the earth was irrigated, there was water in plains and forests, the dry plains turned lush green and the famine ended (Al-Milal wa al-Nihal: Vol. 2, Page 249).

For the sake of making peace and providing comfort to the wronged of the Arab, the Holy Prophet also participated in the agreement called "Halful Fuzool". The participants of this agreement decided that they will remove the unrest from the country and will help and safeguard the oppressed, travelers and the needy. Any oppressors or usurpers will not be allowed to stay in Makkah. The Holy Prophet was so happy with this peace agreement that he used to say, if someone had given me a red camel in exchange for this agreement, I would not have been so happy. Once a woman called the Holy Prophet for help and he solved her problem on immediate basis.

ii. Chastity

The Holy Prophet Muhammad was a figure of modesty. There is a narration regarding his chastity and modesty that he was far more modest than a veiled unmarried girl. (Sahih Bukhari: 3562)

In those days, there was no custom of proper washrooms in homes. The Holy Prophet used to go far away from the densely populated areas to meet his needs. Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah narrates that he went far away from the population so that no one could see him. (Sunan Abi-Daud: 2)

iii. Behaviour with siblings and friends

The Holy Prophet had nosiblings of his own. His foster sister Hazrat Sheema used to make him play in her lap and used to give lullabies in crib.Hazrat Sheema was among the prisoners in Hunain. When she introduced herself to the Holy Prophet , he treated her very respectfully, spread a sheet, made her sit and said: Ask whatever you wish for and it will be granted, ask a favour for the prisoners and they will be given refuge just because of you. Then, upon her request, the Holy Prophet freed all the prisoners

Hazrat Hamza was the uncle of the Holy Prophet . He was also the foster brother of the Holy Prophet . Prophet Muhammad had a lot of compassion and love for Hazrat Hamza because of this dual relationship. He was always treated with kindness. On his martyrdom in the Battle of Uhud, the Holy Prophet was much saddened and later used to visit his grave frequently.

Before the declaration of Prophethood, among the friends of the Holy Prophet Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq Hazrat Hakim bin Hizam and Hazrat Zamad bin Sa'alba were the closest ones. All these friends were highly ethical and decent people. The Holy Prophet had business terms with his friends too. Hazrat Qais bin Sa'ib Makhzoomi  was indulged in trade with the Holy Prophet for a long time. He narrates that the Holy Prophet always had fair dealings with his trade partners.

iv. Courage and bravery and good deed

The blessed life of the Holy Prophet was a perfect example of courage, bravery, and compassion. The first witnesses of the great attributes of the Holy Prophet are the Companions of the Messenger of Allah . In the battle of Hunain, when the Islamic army came into the hands of the enemies, even at that moment, the Prophet was not worried. They were fighting against the enemy with all perseverance and continuously saying:

"I am a true prophet, there is no lie in it. I am the son of a chief like Abdul Muttalib."

Hazrat Bara Bin Azib narrates that on the day of the Battle of Hunain, no one was seen stronger than the Holy Prophet . (Jami at-Tirmidhi: 1688)

The dealing matters of Prophet was so great that when the Quraish were about to have a great dispute on the occasion of the installation of the Black Stone in Makkah, then the Prophet strategically saved all the people of Makkah from such great temptation and corruption by placing the Black Stone in a cloak. He asked the reliable members of each tribe to hold the cloak. When all the people held the sheet, the Holy Prophet picked up the Black Stone and installed it in its place.
